My Environment
"Foula fun"
by Leona (9)
Leona is 9 years old and shares feelings about the environment.
My neighbourhood
I live on an island called Foula. It is in Shetland .I like it here because I feel free. I live where there is only one shop. Itís the school tuck shop! We use peat to heat our house. You can find peat where there is heather. A special tool for cutting peat is called a tushker. you will probably not have a tushker but you can use a spade. We eat a special food it is called Reestit Mutton. This is lamb; salted and then smoked with peat smoke, then boiled and left standing overnight.
Our Christmas is on the 6th of January and our New Year is on the 13th because we use the old calendar.
We have cruies to take sheep in off the hill. A cruie is 2 different things - the first is where everybody with sheep goes up onto the hill and chases the sheep into the croft; the second meaning is the pen that the sheep are chased into and sorted out so each owner can find their own sheep by the marks on their ears.
Changes I would like
I would like a clothes shop on the island.
Things I like:
The animals - horses and rabbits
My family and friends .
Freedom.
My concerns.
Too cold.
No children my age.
No shops.
