The Romanian Athenaeum, Bucharest, Romania

My country
Bucharest, the capital of Romania is the major centre of culture, industry and trade. Located in southern Romania on the Dambovita River, Bucharest has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters.
Many of the Bucharest's buildings are reminiscent of Paris and other Western capitals: among them are the University, the post-office and the Arch of Triumph.
Apart from the old buildings, Bucharest has also modern ones: hotels, banks, shops, schools and hospitals.
There are also a lot of museums of art, history and traditional culture in Bucharest. For instance, the open-air Village Museum (the second most important in Europe after the one in Stockholm), the Romanian Peasant Museum, the Museum of National History or the 16th-17th churches in Bucharest should not be missed by any tourist.

Things I like about living in this country:
Firstly, we like its wide variety of scenery: plains, hills, majestic mountains, fine beaches and the rich flora and fauna in the Danube Delta (about 300 species of birds and 60 species of fish);

Secondly, we also like its variety of mineral waters with exceptional curative powers. There are about 2,000 mineral springs along the entire extent of the Oas-Harghita volcanic chain (in the Eastern Carpathians);
Thirdly, we like the Romanians' personality traits. Our people were and will always be hospitable, determined, open, honest, friendly and hard-working.

Some natural features of this country:
Situated in the south-east of Romania the Danube Delta is a unique place in Europe. Every year it attracts a lot of tourists. It is Heaven on Earth!
The Danube flows into the Black Sea through 3 branches (Chilia, Sulina and St. Gheorghe) that create a magnificent delta.
There are about 300 species of birds and 60 species of fish in the Danube Delta.

The Romanian Black Sea Coast enjoys bright sunshine from May to October. The beaches are wide and sandy and the water is shallow near the coast. Along the seashore there are several salt lakes which contain rich deposits of mud with therapeutic properties.
In the Southern Carpathians, the Bucegi Mountains offer beautiful sights to tourists. The wind and the rain have carved strange shapes into their rocks such as Babele (The Old Women) and the Sphinx.

Some things have changed since I was born
Since the revolutionary movement of 1989 many things have changed in our country. The most important of all is that we have become a democratic state.

If you came to visit me, I would show you interesting places.
We would take him/her to the Village and Folk Art Museum from Bucharest This open-air museum is the second most important in Europe after the one in Stockholm. It offers visitors a complete picture of rural life in all regions of Romania.
We would also take him/her to the Northern Moldavia to admire the well-known painted monasteries, registered by UNESCO as "values of the universal culture" and Maramures - a land of unique pastoral beauty and rich tradition of folk art.

What I could do to make this country a better place for everyone
We could study and work harder. We are confident that hard work is the key of a successful life. Besides, we shouldn't ignore our parents' experience. Only with their help can we succeed in fulfilling our dreams and make our country a better place to live for everyone.
