On Strike in British Columbia, by Henry, 10, Doncaster Elementary
No school today!
No school today!
There has been a strike in British- Columbia!
Unfortunately it only shut down schools for 3 days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) but it all started when the health care industry wanted a significant increase in pay but the government refused. Every year the industry asked for a 3-5% increase and they threatened to go on strike so the government has been forced to increase their pay but this time enough is enough and the government is threatening to decrease the pay by 15%! Unfortunately, up to 4000 medical operations have been canceled and in one children's hospital alone, 49 operations were canceled. I do not agree with either side.

Scott, 10, adds, "The bad thing was that my mum is a teacher and she would have to go picketing too."

Philip, 10, says, "I got an extra day off school, and I wish it was more, but (according to my mom) Gordon Campbell did a good job at saving the province from completely shutting down."

Plant a Tree
Plant a Tree
The first Friday every April is Arbor Day in the United States. This is a special day that encourages people to plant trees and to care for them. The idea for the day was started in Nebraska in 1872. Today people throughout our nation celebrate Arbor Day.

Our Grade 7 class celebrated by helping Worcester County, the county where our school is, in a special program. We read poetry, sang, and spoke about the importance of planting trees for now and into the future. Then after the ceremony, we joined County officials in planting a number of trees.

Pollution in the air by Tristan, North Yorkshire UK
Should Gatwick Airport build a new runway?
Should Gatwick Airport build a new runway?
At Gatwick airport their is I new runway being installed but it will probably make Gatwick, Horley and Crawley the most polluted areas in the UK. Reigate and Banstead Borough Council have recently declared the southern part of Horley (1,500 houses) an air quality management area. This means that there is a risk of poor air quality and could affect the health of people. The number of asthma suffers continues to rise, this may affect 1in 3 residents. People how work there may be at risk to. At present half of the pollution comes from cars and half from the airport, but cars are due to become cleaner while the airport gets worse, 90% of pollution is caused by the aircraft taking off and landing. If NO2 pollution is forecast to more than double with one runway, with two runways it would quadruple. When the wind blows north or south Horley or Crawley gets the most polluted.
Bristol Young Chefs Competition 2004, Joe Carpenter, 14, Bristol UK
Congratulations to Joe
Congratulations to Joe
Not many school students can say they have cooked at a top restaurant, but that is precisely what Joe Carpenter from John Cabot CTC has achieved, along with the prestigious title of Bristol's Young Chef of the Year 2004.

The competition is organised by the Clifton Rotary Club and is now in its third year.

Joe entered a series of heats held at John Cabot CTC then went on the represent the College at the Final held at Red Maids School.

Joe writes :"My winning entry for the competition was a chick pea tagine (a type of Moroccan casserole) with chilli, coriander and lemon couscous, garlic mushrooms, and for the final I also made some Moroccan mint tea. From start to finish the whole experience was fantastic and very exciting, it was a total surprisewhen I won the Final of the competition. During the Heats it was all very close and the chances of winning seemed quite slim, but I managed to get through which I was very happy about. Then in the Final all the food looked amazing and was presented so beautifully that it was anybody's guess who would win.

When I won I received £80 and a Food Dictionary from the Clifton Rotary Club. I was also awarded an extra prize from Jason Deason, I was given the chance to cook at his restaurant. On Friday 23rd April I went and cooked at his restaurant. It was an interesting and new experience. I'd never known before how busy it was in a restaurant's kitchen. Overall it has been a very fun and educational experience."
Scholarships to Catering College, Tom Hancock, 16, Bristol UK
A career in catering
A career in catering
Tom Hancock and Robert Tanner from John Cabot City Technology College, Bristol, have both recently won catering scholarships for Bournemouth College. Tom says, "Both of us attended an interview and fought off heavy competition and have now been awarded places to start in September 2004.

At the end of the three year course Robert and I will be qualified chefs. The reason why I have chosen to become a chef is because I have always enjoyed preparing food. In Year 10 I also completed a successful work placement at Picasso's Restaurant and this inspired me further to follow the profession.

On the course we will receive intensive training and the opportunity to work in some of London's major restaurants. This will also mean that we will work alongside some of the UK's top chefs.

See the collage kites that Nicky, Annie and friends made
Last Saturday my friends and I had a wonderful time at the Kite Loft Kite Fest in Ocean City, Maryland, in the USA. We were on the KidZone TV show while we were having fun with the kites. We saw hundreds of different beautifully colored kites in the air. There were lots of interesting kites to see like dolphins, tie-dye, spinning hoops, SpongeBob, bears, and more. It was fun flying our very own kites. We got to meet the King of the Wind and then we went inside the Kite Loft, which is a store in Ocean City. We dressed up in funny hats and cool sunglasses. Then we played with the fun toys there. We had a great time at the Kite Loft Kit Festival.

Utsira, a small island and community situated approximately 15 km west of Røvær, has concentrated on developing alternative sources of power, such as wind power and hydrogen. The company behind these developments, Norsk Hydro, will present this innovation at the international technology exhibition in Hannover this week.

The Strange Shell
The Strange Shell
A fisherman reports that he caught a shell last week when he was out fishing in Skåneviksfjorden, a fjord not far from Røvær.

He says that the shell is somewhat "odd" looking, brown, 17 cm long and 11 cm wide. He caught it on a longline in very deep water (250 meter)

He has never seen such a shell before and sent it off to the Marine Research Institute in Bergen. Some researchers believe it´s an angel´s wing, others think it is what Norwegians call a "cowshell".
Endangered Giant Pandas, by Vanessa, 10, North Yorkshire UK

The adorable Giant Panda is one of the most threatened animals on the planet. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has been helping the government of China with its Panda Conservation Programme, which has made excellent progress recently. There are now 33 giant panda reserves, protecting over 16,000 km2 of forest in and around giant panda habitat.

Vanessa writes:
Giant pandas are becoming close to being extinct. There are some reasons why giant pandas are close to becoming extinct:

Reason 1; the pandas breeding season is from March to May. Pandas usually have one or two pups a year or none. This makes it harder to increase the population of pandas.

Reason 2; Giant pandas are endangered because of where they live in the wild. Giant pandas are restricted to certain areas of China, (their habitat), so that means that there is not enough space for all the pandas to live in.

Reason 3; when humans put them into captivity, the pandas will become dependent on humans and will not be able to go back into the wild. This could be a problem but also a solution, because when pandas are captive humans try to breed them but they have been unsuccessful.
