Life in the Future – Learning Guide
|
What sort of life do we want in the future and how can we make it happen?
SchoolNet children explore their futures. What will life be like for them in the future? What do they hope will happen? What do they think will probably happen? They think about world issues - war and peace, poverty and wealth and personal issues like where they want to live, what jobs they want to do, getting married and having babies.

|
1. How to get started
|
Ask your children to think and talk about:- What do you think your life will be like 5, 10, 20 years from now?
- How will our neighbourhood be different?
- How will our country be different?
- How will the world be different?
- What will your home and family will be like?
- How do you think your life will unfold?
- What do you think is possible in the future?
- What do you think is most likely to happen (probable)?
- What can you do to make the future happen the way you want?

2. How to choose the focus of study
|
Children could choose a particular topic to talk about such as:- education
- families
- transport
- the environment
- space
- war and peace
Alternatively, they could choose a particular aspect of their lives to focus on. For example:- where will I live?
- what will I do for a living?
- how would I like my neighbourhood to change?
- how could I change the world?

3. How to organise the practicalities
|
|
Writing up: Children can write up their projects off line, either by hand or on a word processor, and then copy and paste onto their SchoolNet Global template. They can edit their work online as often as they wish before they publish.

4. How to ensure child safety
|
|
SchoolNet Global is a safe, mediated environment, where children are protected from unsuitable material. All work is checked by SchoolNet Global mediators prior to publication. By following the SchoolNet Global Safety Guidelines, you can ensure that your children have fun and learn in safety.

5. The 5 Steps to Cyberspace
|
The SchoolNet Global publishing process takes children through easy steps to publishing their work to the world:
1. Find Out
The child chooses a project and undertakes research.
2. Sort
The child collates, organises, interprets and edits their data and decides how to present it to an Internet audience.
3. Create
Children can create their text in any wordprocessing package then copy and paste into their web page template. Simply click to add images saved on your own computer.
4. Check
Children check what they have written and ensure they have permission from interviewees to publish their work.
5. Show
Children submit their work for publication to the Internet. Work is approved by the child's teacher or parent and by SchoolNet Global mediators prior to publication. Within a few days, their completed pages will be published in the SchoolNet Global Gallery for the world to see.

6. How children gather and organise information
|
Children could brainstorm their ideas on their own or in groups, or could create a flow chart of their ideas. Children could discuss specific topics in groups or research other SchoolNet Global published pages for ideas.
Children could illustrate their work with photographs, or drawings to help others understand their ideas.

|
7. Extension activities
|
More able children could carry out in-depth studies, for example: - Choose one important issue and explore possible and probably futures in depth.
- Consider how much the future is in our own hands.
- Write a science-fiction story about your vision of the future.
