Alison Richardson, Cliftonville Primary School, England - December 2001
About the author
Alison Richardson, ICT manager and class teacher in Cliftonville Primary School (524 children). I teach Year 3 but next year I will be with Year 4.
The learners - describe your students
The children are all Year 3 (7-8 years old) and vary from SEN children to very able children. A few of the children had used the Internet before this project.
What did you do with your group?
'Early Childhood Memories' and 'Games People Play'. Stimulus for both projects was given in the classroom before the children were given the interview templates to complete as homework!
How did the work fit in with your mainstream curriculum work?
ICT curriculum -worked well as it fitted in with our scheme of work, i.e. use of the internet and cutting, copying and pasting work. Early Childhood Memories - done for fun! - as it interested children - not something we have much time for these days. Games People Play fitted in with PSHE and the work I had been doing to improve their social skills.
Describe what happened
Introductory lesson.
Children conducted interviews (homework). James scanned in pictures for us. Worked in pairs offline typing info in and then pasting it in. Checked and edited by all necessary.
Learner benefits - what did your students learn?
To ask questions (sensibly)
To get the information they seek
To follow an interview planner
To explore a website and produce their own webpage
To realise the need for security on the Net
To reinforce previously taught skills - keyboard, cut, copy, paste etc.
Teacher benefits - What did you gain from this experience?
Seeing well-motivated and interested children enjoying themselves.
Learning how to use a scanner and digital camera.
Chatting to other teachers.
Behavioural changes - how will it change what you do future?
Next year with my new class I hope to complete more investigations.
I will be able to add scanned pictures that work!
