Tsunami disaster - Sophie, St Mary’s Primary, Folkestone, England
|
On Sunday 26th December 2004 a tsunami took place in Asia. A lot of countries were hit by the tsunami and a lot of people were killed. The tsunami hit Indonesia, Thailand, India and lots of other places.
It hit Indonesia first and just started to spread, as the waves got bigger.
Somehow the tsunami managed to hit Sri Lanka, which is an island fairly near. The death toll has gone up to 140,000 overall and is expected to rise.
Adults were dragged out to sea by the waves.
There have been 40 British people who have been killed and there are 159 still missing. The youngest Britain they found dead was just a harmless baby. There are some people who were swept out to sea and we will never know who they were.
The British people alone have raised over £76m and hopefully this will rise. You can donate by phone, Internet, local bank or post office. If there are any blankets or clothes please donate them to the Tsunami Appeal.
SOMETHING SMALL CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE!
There are people in Asia and Sri Lanka who have nothing to eat, nothing to drink, no clean water at all, no shelter and the only clothing is what they have on. I am sure there is something spare you can donate to the people in Indonesia and all the places that were hit by the tsunami.
There are lots of ways your or your parents can donate. Ring 0870 60 60 900 or go to the Tsunami Earthquake Appeal. Please help.

|
|
This term SchoolNet Global schools and others are involved in an exciting project which is going to be on display in Canterbury Cathedral from the 4-9th October 2004 and will be published on SchoolNet Global. The project will also link in with International Education week 15-19th November. We already have schools in Spain, France, USA, Canada and China taking part.
The theme is ‘A Child’s Message for the Future’, and children from as many different countries as possible from around the world are being invited to write a message for the future. All ages are welcome.
This is all your pupils’ have to do:
Write a short caption with a message for the future.
Click here to submit caption to International Children’s News (ICN)
Please include the pupil’s first name, age, school and country.
The caption can be written in mother tongue or in English or both!
Your pupils’ can also write a poem, a longer story or article or design a picture to go with it. These can be emailed to us here.
Children’s captions will be displayed on banners around the cathedral. The outcomes will also be published next month on SchoolNet Global so everyone can see the messages our children are writing for the future of the world.

Amazing iChat, by Danielle, 11, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

Children from Canada (main image) talk to children in the UK (inset)
|
 |
My name is Danielle and I am 11 years old and go to Doncaster School in Victoria, British Columbia. My school is one of the five founding schools in the world to participate in "iCHAT", which is a video conference where you can talk to people through your computer, and I was lucky enough to get chosen. I did it with my friends Cristina, Tanner and Henry. We talked to kids from America and England.
I am now going to tell you what it was like. Well since the time difference we had to be at school by 8:15 a.m. to set up, but in England it was 4:15 p.m., and because of the distance, there was a delay between talking. We ended up talking to each group for about half an hour and got to know each other. This experience was amazing and I would like to thank everyone at School Net Global!!

Fundraising for South Africa, by Gemma, 17, Bristol UK.

Dihlabeng School, South Africa
|
 |
Within our school we are helping to raise money to help teach less fortunate children in South Africa. The students in our school are finding more and more ways to raise this money, using different techniques like non-uniform days, fetes and also we have a project called the Christmas Angel where all students fill a shoe box, with little treats and also necessities for living and send these off to the children of Romania. Our school also sends away computers. We also work with a lot of companies that sponsor the teachers and help with funding to transport these essential things.
We feel extremely proud to be part of this school and we are happy and glad that we have the chance to help and educate younger and more deprived children in another country.
Children at Leaden Hall School and Peatmoor School help children at Dihlabeng School in South Africa. To find out more, read SchoolNet Global Cultural Conversations issue 9.

Saving the Environment and Retired Donkeys, by Becky, 12, Bristol UK
|
For the past 4 terms, seven Year 7 students have been selling notepads, these are made of recycled paper to help the environment and save trees. The money raised goes to the organisation of Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary. They are a registered Charity. The things that the money goes to is renting fields, hay, straw and rescuing badly treated donkeys from other countries i.e. India.
There are nearly 8,000 donkeys at the Sanctuary and one of those donkeys is called Marguerite. She is a very lucky donkey as she has been adopted by us!
We also have adopted another donkey, Eeyore, he is a mushroom coloured donkey who is 20 years old and lives in a horse sanctuary in Bristol. He has just returned from filming for 8 weeks on the Channel 4 series. Eeyore used to be quite shy around the cameras but he soon learnt his place and relished the spotlight. The College Charities Committee has helped us to sponsor these donkeys.

Bear Attacks 15 Year old Boy, by Maxime, 11, North Yorkshire
|
|
A 15 year old boy was on a wilderness expedition. When he woke up he found a bear in his tent sat on his feet. When the boy tried to get free, the bear bit him on the arm. The boy fought back by hitting the bear 6 times. The bear attacked again. The boy punched his way free and screamed a personal alarm gathering the other camp members to come. The bear ran after them and the members of the camp blasted the bear with pepper spray and fired a flame at her feet. A few months later the bear was tracked down and killed. The boy is in hospital with severe injuries to his arm.

The women paint on all different types of shoes and paint all different kinds of designs on the shoes. They've are mostly painting Dr. Scholl's, but they are also going to paint Ugg shoes.
It is fun to see all the painted shoes.

Great Fun during English Week, by Lydia, 17, Klaipeda, Lithuania
|
|
|
"Attention! We are pleased to announce English Week!"
|
 |
A week ago we had an English week in our school. We have a week of English language every year, but this year students took an active part in it. The students of the 11th form became English teachers for several lessons. They taught younger pupils in a fun way: they played different games in English, guessed riddles, crossword puzzles; the smallest ones learned animals' names; others played Bingo.
The kids had a lot of fun especially when got sweets as a prize for correct answer. One pupil of the 5th form won a ticket to the cinema, and he was so happy. Pupils also made up posters and newspapers about English speaking countries, interesting facts and English humor. There were lots of interesting posters, and even senior students found interesting information there. Our teachers organized a tiny cinema for students, and we watched films in English.
As with everything good, our English Week ended very soon, but we still remember the fun we had at school during the week of English.
Have you had a special week or day at your school? Tell us all about it here.
