Games People Play
"French Skipping"
by Megan Charlton (7) and Katie Threlfall (7)

Kay Darby is 24 years old and tells us about a game played when aged 7.

My school break times:
Play time was the best chance of the day to go out and run around the playground and make lots of noise. I had three very best friends, Angela, Kathryn and Elaine. We were inseparable

My favourite school playground game:
My favourite game that we played was french skipping.

How to play:
You needed a long, long piece of elastic, and two other friends to play with. Two people stretched the elastic around their ankles and the third person had to jump up and down on the elastic. You always had to end up on the elastic or you lost your turn.

It is played competetively, indoors by between 3 and 123 players - girls, aged from 7 to adult.

What you need:
lots of elastic

Special game location, surface or design:
it could be played anywhere, anytime, any place

Special rhymes, songs or language used:
There wasn't any special language, but there was lots of cheering.
