Daph Holdgate's early childhood memory:
The person who I interviewed, is my next door neighbour, Mrs. Daphine Holdgate who is about 70+ years old. She prefers to be called Daph . Daph grew up in a large family , of three sisters and two brothers in Dagenham .

Her family were well off financially and didn’t suffer hardship during her childhood . Daph told me one fantastic childhood memory, it was all about Daph and her sister going to their regular five week haircut in village . In the 1930s a haircut cost sixpennce each per person , which was a lot of money in those days. The day of their hair cut came around , and Daph and her sister went to their hairdressers.

On the way Daph’s sister lost one of the sixpences, and couldn’t pay for the sister’s hair , but Daph could pay for her haircut. Daph and her sister could not go home with out the sister’s hair cut. Both of them went home and before the parents came home, Daph and her sister went across to the local park with a pair of scissors and started to cut the sister’s hair. When the mother came home from shopping to see the haircut, she thought that Daph’s hair was very good but the hairdresser could have done a better job on the sister’s hair!

Daph Holdgate is 70+ years old now and was 10+ years old at the time.
