Annie is 12 years old and says:
My country
Singapore is a tiny island off the south tip of Malaysia. Malaysia and Singapore are connected by a causeway crossing the distance over the ocean. It is in south east asia and is a 7 hours flight away from Australia. It has areas of land which have been man-made, for example, part of the Changi Airport is built on man-made land. There is a primary rainforest still left which is Bukit Timah Park whihc is on a hill and has weild monkeys and snakes still living there. Most people live in condominiums or appartments, but the odd people that do live in houses often have big houses with pools. One of my friends had a house, but they got frequent snake encounters such as pythons (not too harmful but massive). There is a lot of public transport such as taxis and buses, but if you live in the centre you would almost definitely use the Metro a lot. It goes all around Singapore as it is a small country and doesnt cost much. Near the main work centre is the Singapore River, which was guided by the Merlion. Along there is a row of restaurants on Clark Quay ranging from Chinese, to Indian to Italian and Thai and all foods you can think of. Singapore has different areas, many are built up and there are a few areas of rainforest and open areas.
Things I like about living in this country:
I love the variety of food and the chinese food is spectacular and you will never get the smae kind of chinese from any take-away.
The scenery and wildlife around. I dont like the snakes and bugs but i do love the monkeys and birds etc.
I love the efficency of the country, with the public transport being quick. Not to mention the modern electronic software and how it is so up-to-date.
Some natural features of this country:
There is a river running through it that was originally used for importing and exporing, which is one of the reasons it was trhived so much.
There is a hill very near the middle whic is covered with rainforest and has a lot of wildlife living in and amongst it. It has been turned in to a park where you cna walk or ride a bike through but watch out for the cheeky monkeys as they are not afriad to come and rummage through you bag!
The coast line is made up of very little sandy beaches and it has woods almost directly before the short strip of sand. Fish and crabs are amongst the sea and it isn't uncommon for restaurants to be out on stilts in the sea or just on the beach. East Coast Parkway runs along the beach and throught the forest and has a line of restaurants along it. There is one part of the East Coast Beach that has is made up of piled rocks with lizards living amongst the cracks.
Some things have changed since I was born
Since i was born it has grown tremendously in economy and has had more man-made land built. The Changi Airport is a lot bigger than it was and is still growing. More rainforest has been destroyed and the wildife has become more endagered. The Night Safari opened up which is the equivalent to the zoo, but you go around it at night. The animals in it are shared between the zoo and the night safari. More hotels have been added such as the Fullerton hotel and the Raffles Hotel has increased in size and has been updated and changed on the inside. Tanglin Trust School has updated itself wth new buildings and new teachers and other new things.
If you came to visit me, I would show you interesting places.
i would take them to Orchard Road and Tanglin Road to shop, as i am a shop addict and you can but really nice shoes that fit small feet, because the singaporean women have small feet. I would also take a day trip to Sentosa if they improved the maintenance on some fo the rides.
the Night Safari, because it is a lovely place to see animals and apart from mosquitos it is a wonderful place to go round at night. You can walk or take the tram and there are lots of attractions to see inside it.
What I could do to make this country a better place for everyone
I would expand it's land size so we could have more space. I would also rebuild more rainforest for future generations to share and enjoy our wildlife. I would improve the shops for children with a bigger variety of styles. I would put in a theme park for the fun-loving adventure people to enjoy and then quite parks for the peaceful, relaxed people to take a walk in. i would help the few people that live in poverty and beg on the street and improve the hygiene of everywhere. For example the toilets, the hawker centres, the streets and some shabby houses people end up living in. I would improve the efficency of the emergency services and also imrpove the maintenance work in Sentosa. All together i like the way Singapore is and would hate to change anything because then that would man that Singapore changes the unique way it is. So although there are a few things i would change i like the specatacular way Singapore is.
